How competitions work

Every send counts toward the season.

A BoulderLink competition turns weeks of climbing into a single, transparent leaderboard. Log your sends across boulder, lead and challenges — a clear scoring formula does the rest, live, with no judges and no paper scorecards.

The format

Four phases, one leaderboard.

Every competition follows the same rhythm — the gym sets it up once, then it runs itself until the final standings lock in.

01

Gym sets it up

A coach picks the dates, disciplines, categories and a scoring preset — solo or teams.

02

Climbers log sends

Tap to record each send, flash or project on the wall. Points apply the instant you top out.

03

Leaderboard updates

Individual and team boards recalculate live — by discipline, category and crew.

04

Results lock in

When the clock runs out, standings freeze and the gym publishes the season recap.

Three disciplines

Points come from everywhere you climb.

A competition can run on one discipline or all three. Every send adds to one running total — the breakdown stays honest so you always see where your points came from.

Boulder

Graded · Font scale

The core of most comps. Each problem is worth points based on its grade, with a flash bonus for first-try sends.

Lead

Graded · French scale

Rope routes scored on their own tariff. Optional for gyms with a lead wall, weighted alongside boulder in the total.

Challenges

Circuit · distance · time · reps

Side quests that aren't about grade — finish a circuit, log volume, hold a hangboard edge — each worth fixed points.

The scoring formula

Transparent maths, not a black box.

Every point is computed from one readable formula. Each send earns a base value, then optional modifiers stack on top — the gym decides which are switched on.

Per-send score · grade-based preset
score = GradePoints × Flash Penalty × Category + Time
aggregated as the sum of your top 10 sends per discipline.

Grade points

Required base

The value of a send, set by a grade table or an exponential curve.

7A → 260

Flash bonus

Optional

Reward first-try sends with a multiplier, a flat bonus, or both.

× 1.5

Attempt penalty

Optional

Shave points per try, or only after a threshold of attempts.

− 0.1 · tries

Category multiplier

Optional

Balance brackets like Junior or Senior against the Open field.

× cat

Time bonus

Optional

Extra points for early completion or the fastest ascent.

Worked example

One send, start to score.

Here's how a single flash turns into points under a grade-based preset — the same maths runs behind every row of the leaderboard.

Crow Black
7A · Prow · Black tape
Grade points — 7A on the table 260
Flash bonus — sent first try ×1.5 +130
Attempt penalty — 1 try, none 0
Send score 390
  • Start from the grade. A 7A is worth 260 base points on this comp's tariff.
  • Reward the flash. First-try means a ×1.5 multiplier — an extra 130 points.
  • No penalty. A clean first attempt loses nothing — projecting many tries would.
  • Only your best count. This 390 joins your top 10 sends; weaker ones drop off as you climb harder.
Scoring presets

Pick a tested format, or build your own.

Gyms start from a preset built around a real competition style, then tune any component. Climbers just see a clear ruleset before they enter.

Recommended

OMC Standard

Grade-based points, best-N aggregation, and flash bonus. The default for multi-discipline events.

Grade table · +flash · Top 10

Gym Standard

Flat points per grade, everything counts, no penalties. Friendly and simple.

Flat grade · Sum all

Custom

Start from a blank formula and build every component from scratch — recreate any ruleset, like an OMC-style tariff.

Who's competing

Solo, squad, or both.

Run the same scoring as an individual ladder, a team battle, or both at once. Categories keep the brackets fair.

Individual

Every climber is ranked on their own points. The classic ladder — chase the climbers just above you and watch your rank move in real time.

  • Personal points total & live rank
  • Per-discipline breakdown
  • Jump-to-self on a long board
Open Junior Senior By gender

Team

Climbers group into crews and their best scores aggregate into a single team total. Carry your squad, or get carried — every send still matters.

  • Combined team total & rank
  • Each member's contribution
  • Runs alongside the solo board

The leaderboard

One honest board, broken down.

Every total splits into the disciplines that built it. No paper scorecards, no waiting for results — the standings are always current.

Common questions

Before you enter.

Do I have to climb everything to compete?

No. Most formats only count your best sends — often the top 10 per discipline — so a few strong sends matter more than grinding every route in the gym.

What happens if I project instead of flash?

You still earn the grade's base points. You just miss the flash bonus, and if the gym enabled an attempt penalty, extra tries shave a little off. The send always counts.

How are categories kept fair?

Gyms can split the field into Open, Junior and Senior brackets, and optionally apply a category multiplier so each group is ranked on a level board.

Can I be on a team and still have a solo rank?

Yes. When a comp runs both formats, your sends feed your personal rank and your team's combined total at the same time — no double-logging.

When do points appear on the board?

Instantly. The moment you log a send, the formula runs and both the individual and team leaderboards recalculate live.

Who sets the scoring formula?

A gym coach or admin builds it when creating the competition — choosing a preset and toggling components. Climbers always see the full ruleset before entering.
